How each guard type works

Perforated screens and helmets

Perforated screens sit over the trough with punched holes or slots. Reverse-curve helmets use surface tension to pull water over a curved nose while leaves fall off the edge. Both work in light debris and summer rain.

In Ontario fall, maple keys land sideways across the holes and oak tassels mat over them. Shingle grit fills the openings from below. Once that layer freezes, water sheets over the guard instead of entering the trough. We pull off more failed screens and helmets than any other type on two-storey homes with mature trees.

Foam inserts and brush guards

Foam inserts fill the trough with porous polyurethane. Brush guards sit inside like giant bottle brushes. Both are cheap and easy to drop in from a ladder.

Foam holds water, then holds ice. After two or three freeze-thaw cycles it compresses, traps grit, and grows moss on the shaded north side. Brush bristles catch keys and needles upright, and the whole brush freezes into the trough by January. Both need lifting out and cleaning, which defeats the purpose of a guard. We do not recommend either for full winters in London, Hamilton or KW.

Gutterglove stainless micro-mesh

Gutterglove Pro is a stainless steel micro-mesh sheet over a rigid aluminium frame that mounts to the gutter lip and tucks under the first shingle course. The mesh openings are sized to block shingle grit, maple keys, needles and oak tassels while passing water at high volume.

Stainless does not rust, the frame carries snow load without sagging into the trough, and the smooth top sheds debris with wind and rain. Meltwater passes through instead of sheeting over. Ontario winter failure points

Ice dams and freeze-thaw

Ice dams start in the attic, not the gutter. Warm house air leaks into the attic, melts roof snow from below, and the meltwater refreezes at the cold eave. Guards do not cause ice dams. But open troughs full of frozen debris make them worse, because trapped meltwater has nowhere to drain. Micro-mesh keeps the trough clear so meltwater reaches the downspout during a January thaw. If you get repeating dams at the same eave every year, fix the attic first, then guard the gutter.

Snow load and warping

A metre of wet snow sliding off a south-facing roof hits the gutter edge hard. Light plastic screens crack, snap out of their clips, and drop into the trough. Foam compresses and stays compressed.

The rigid aluminium frame on Gutterglove Pro spans hanger to hanger and sheds sliding snow over the nose. On lake-effect slopes west of London and the escarpment runs above Hamilton and Burlington, that frame strength is the difference between a guard that survives March and one that needs replacing in spring.

Maple keys, oak tassels and shingle grit

Southwestern Ontario trees are the real test. Norway maple keys helicopter down in May and wedge sideways into any opening larger than a few millimetres. Oak tassels mat in June. By October, asphalt shingle grit washes down every valley and settles like sandpaper.

Screens pass grit straight into the trough, where it builds up around hangers and outlets. Foam and brushes trap it permanently. Stainless micro-mesh blocks grit at the surface, and the next rain washes it off. On treed lots in Old South London, Ancaster and Uptown Waterloo, that self-shedding is what keeps downspouts flowing without a ladder visit.

Costs and installation notes

Per-foot pricing moves with storeys, gutter condition, hanger spacing and downspout count. Single-storey bungalows in London cost less per foot than three-level townhouses in Kitchener with limited ladder access. As a planning range for the 2026-27 season: basic screens $7 to $12 per foot installed, foam or brush $4 to $8 per foot, professionally installed stainless micro-mesh $18 to $30 per foot.

Installation quality matters as much as the product. Pitch must hold fall to the outlet, hangers should sit every 24 inches or tighter under snow load, and downspouts need capacity for the roof area they drain. Ontario Building Code Part 9 requires positive drainage away from foundations, and most municipalities expect downspout discharge at least 1.8 metres from the foundation wall unless tied to a proper drain.
